homeodomain Definition
Definition
A homeodomain is a type of highly conserved protein sequence (about 60 amino acids in length) that is involved in the regulation of gene expression during embryonic development. It is a DNA-binding domain that recognizes and binds to specific DNA sequences, thus controlling the expression of genes. Homeobox genes, which contain homeodomains, are crucial for pattern formation and the regulation of developmental processes across many species, including humans.
